Kathy Hochul says compliant businesspeople have ‘nothing to worry about’ after a query on the state’s commercial environment.

In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s $355 million fine and temporary ban from engaging in commerce in New York, Governor Kathy Hochul sought to alleviate concerns among business owners in the state.

In an interview on the New York radio show The Cats Roundtable, Hochul addressed fears that the penalties against Trump could have a chilling effect on the state’s commercial climate.

Reassurance Amidst Concerns

When asked whether businesspeople should be worried about potential repercussions from prosecutors, Hochul emphasized that law-abiding individuals need not fear.

She underscored the distinction between Trump’s behavior and that of most New York business owners, stating that those who abide by the law have nothing to worry about.

Unique Circumstances

Hochul highlighted the extraordinary nature of the fraud case against Trump, describing it as an unusual circumstance.

She acknowledged concerns raised by some business leaders but emphasized that the case against Trump stemmed from specific fraudulent practices, rather than targeting honest business owners.

Upholding Integrity

Asserting the integrity of most New York business owners, Hochul emphasized that the majority operate honestly and transparently.

She pointed to the case’s findings regarding Trump’s actions, stating that the judge determined he did not follow the rules and was subsequently prosecuted.

Hochul emphasized that state intervention is warranted only in cases where rules are violated, ensuring fairness and upholding the law.

Maintaining Judicial Independence

Hochul emphasized the importance of maintaining judicial independence and avoiding interference in legal proceedings.

While acknowledging concerns over the size of the fine imposed on Trump, she reiterated that the governor does not have jurisdiction over such matters, emphasizing the importance of non-interference in legal processes.

In her remarks, Governor Hochul aimed to reassure New York business owners of the state’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring a fair and transparent commercial environment.
