Human rights official resigns from US State Department over Gaza policy

Annelle Sheline states, ‘I no longer wanted to be affiliated with this administration,’ reasoning Biden is shunning US law over Israel.

Annelle Sheline, a human rights official at the US State Department, has resigned, citing concerns over the Biden administration’s approach to the conflict in Gaza. 

She accuses the administration of disregarding US law by continuing to supply arms to Israel and suppressing evidence of Israeli human rights abuses.

Loss of Confidence in Policy Influence

Sheline had hoped to influence policy from her position within the Near Eastern section of the bureau of democracy, human rights, and labor. 

Despite participating in discussions, signing dissent cables, and raising concerns with her supervisor, she ultimately lost confidence that her efforts would impact the US’s support for Israel.

The decision to resign was driven by Sheline’s desire to disassociate herself from the administration’s actions, particularly for the sake of her young daughter’s future understanding of her involvement. 

She wants to be able to tell her daughter that she did what she could to uphold principles of justice and human rights.

Colleagues’ Support

While Sheline is only the second official to resign over US policy on Gaza, she reveals that many of her colleagues share her concerns. Some have expressed a willingness to resign if they could afford to do so, urging Sheline to speak out about her reasons for leaving.

Violations of International and US Law

Sheline points to evidence suggesting that Israel’s actions in Gaza violate international law, and she accuses the Biden administration of breaching US law by continuing to provide military assistance. 

She specifically references the Leahy laws and section 620 (I) of the Foreign Assistance Act, which prohibit aid to governments involved in human rights violations.

Call for Accountability

Sheline’s resignation underscores the need for accountability in US foreign policy decisions, particularly regarding arms sales and support for governments implicated in human rights abuses. Her actions highlight the importance of upholding legal and ethical standards in international relations.
