London may be known for its skyscrapers and overcast skies, but nearly half of the city is comprised of green and blue spaces, including thousands of parks, miles of waterways, and millions of trees.

We caught up with Dan Raven-Ellison, founder of London National Park City and a National Geographic Explorer, to uncover some of London’s greenest spots.

Ecological Epicenter

“People often overlook London’s role as an ecological center,” says Raven-Ellison. “With nearly as many trees as people and a staggering diversity of wildlife, including more peregrine falcons than Yosemite National Park, London is a thriving hub of biodiversity.”

Exploring on Foot

As the creator of Slow Ways, a project aimed at connecting all of Britain via walking routes, Raven-Ellison advocates for exploring London on foot. “Walking allows you to truly experience the city,” he explains. “You’ll stumble upon unexpected treasures, from local histories to international cuisines and vibrant community projects.”

Rewilding Efforts

London Wildlife Trust, in collaboration with the Mayor of London, launched a funding drive in 2023 to rewild pockets of land and water across the city.

This initiative aims to restore natural areas and promote the return of wildlife. Raven-Ellison sees this as a continuation of London’s longstanding tradition of protecting and celebrating nature.

Top Recommendations

With so many options to choose from, Raven-Ellison finds it difficult to pick favorites. However, he shares some insider recommendations for making the most of London’s outdoor spaces:

  • Quirky Local Histories: Explore lesser-known areas to uncover quirky local histories and hidden gems.
  • Cultural Delights: Experience London’s diverse culinary scene by sampling dishes from around the world.
  • Community Projects: Get involved in community initiatives, such as clothing exchanges or volunteer opportunities.

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventure off the beaten path, London’s green spaces offer something for everyone to enjoy.
