The US has forewarned that Russia could capture Ukraine’s critical eastern town of Avdiivka – the scene of some of the fiercest fighting in recent months.

Avdiivka at Risk of Russian Control, Says NSC Spokesman

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby issued a stark warning, stating that Avdiivka is in danger of falling into Russian control due to Ukraine’s ammunition shortages.

Russian troops have reportedly made significant advances in Avdiivka, posing a threat of encirclement to the town.

President Zelensky’s Commitment to Saving Lives

In response to the escalating situation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged to take all necessary measures to safeguard as many Ukrainian lives as possible.

Avdiivka, which has suffered extensive destruction, holds strategic importance as a gateway to nearby Donetsk, the regional capital seized by Russian-backed fighters in 2014.

Impact of Russian Assaults and US Aid Delays

Kirby emphasized that Ukrainian forces are facing severe challenges due to the relentless assaults by Russian troops.

The lack of artillery ammunition, compounded by delays in US military aid, has left Ukrainian defenses vulnerable to Russian advances.

Despite the US Senate’s recent approval of a foreign aid package, including substantial support for Ukraine, the bill faces obstacles in the House of Representatives.

Consequences of Delayed Assistance

The delay in approving military assistance to Ukraine has drawn concern from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who warned that it is already impacting the battlefield.

Ukraine relies heavily on weapons supplies from the US and Western allies to counter Russia’s superior military capabilities, highlighting the urgent need for continued support to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
