Law enforcement authorities in Placer County are cautioning residents about a deceptive car scam reported across California, urging vigilance and awareness among potential victims.

Modus Operandi of the Scam:

The scam typically involves individuals attempting to sell their vehicles, with unsuspecting sellers targeted by fraudulent buyers.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), the scam unfolds when a seller is contacted by a buyer who expresses interest in purchasing the vehicle.

Deceptive Tactics Employed:

Upon arranging a meeting, the scammer, accompanied by at least two other individuals, meets the seller at an agreed-upon location.

During the vehicle inspection process, one of the scammers engages the seller while another discreetly pours oil into various parts of the vehicle, including the radiator, engine, and rear.

Manipulative Strategy:

The introduction of oil into the vehicle causes it to heat up abnormally during a test drive, creating the illusion of engine malfunction.

Exploiting this fabricated issue, the scammer then attempts to persuade the seller that the vehicle’s engine is irreparably damaged, justifying a significantly reduced price.

Financial Impact and Regional Spread:

Placer County law enforcement has reported cases where sellers have incurred substantial financial losses, amounting to thousands of dollars, due to falling victim to this scam.

Similar incidents have been documented in Sacramento, El Dorado, and Nevada counties, indicating a widespread operation.

Collaborative Investigation and Reporting:

PCSO detectives are actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies in other affected counties to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for perpetrating this scam.

Residents who have encountered similar fraudulent activities are encouraged to report their experiences to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office by calling 530-889-7800.

By raising awareness and remaining vigilant, residents can help prevent further instances of this deceptive scheme and safeguard themselves against financial exploitation.
